Stellate cells, also called lipocytes or Ito cells, are relatively small and morphologically bear some resemblance to fibroblasts. Their principal characteristic is the presence of numerous fat droplets within the cytoplasm. There is evidence that these cells store vitamin A. Stellate cells also have an important role in fibrogenesis, which is a significant component of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis.
