Pruritus ani

Pruritus ani is itching of the anus. This is a very common condition, and is a symptom, not a disease. As such, only treatment of the underlying problem will resolve the itching.

Local causes of pruritis ani include anal fistulas, prolapsing internal hemorrhoids, large external hemorrhoids, skin cancer, fungal infection, or radiation (acute or chronic). Gastrointestinal system causes include colitis, cancer, Crohn's disease, pinworms, or diet, especially excessive caffeine.

Other causes include topical ointments, reaction to systemic drugs, or systematic diseases such as diabetes, chronic renal failure, or lymphoma.
