  • Caused by Pneumocystis carinii
  • CD4 cells under 200 (85% chance)
  • Gradual onset over 1-3 weeks with
    • shortness of breath
    • non productive cough
    • fever
  • Advanced disease 20% mortality rate
  • >90% preventable with prophylaxis (TMP/SMX 1 DS OD 3 x / week if CD4 < 200 or oral candidiasis)
