Omentum
From IKE
Greater omentum
- an extensive inferior fold
- Formed by the gastrosplenic ligament
- contains an inferior extension of the lesser sac, the inferior recess
- The two layers eventually fuse, obliterating much of the recess
- Forms an apron, covering much of the small and large intestines.
Lesser omentum
- The ventral mesentery which initially attached the caudal foregut to the anterior abdominal wall becomes interrupted by the liver, which grows into it
- The part that remains connecting the liver to the esophagus, stomach and proximal duodenum is the lesser omentum
- Forms part of the roof of the lesser sac
- Its lower free edge (between liver and duodenum) forms the anterior border of the epiploic foramen which connects the greater and lesser sacs.
