Objectives

  • Recognize that which is urgent and non-urgent
  • Be able to obtain salient history
  • Be able to examine a traumatized eye
  • Be able to record the visual acuity as accurately as possible
  • Be able to manage common eye injuries
  • Know when to refer.

Exam

  • If posterior segment injury - Refer
    • do not use ointment in eye
  • Do not dilate in head trauma and narrow angle glaucoma
  • Do not do MRI if a metallic Foreign Body is suspected
  • Chemical burn
    • Irrigate
    • Topical anesthetic
    • check for foreign bodies
    • Patch eye
    • Prompt referral
  • corneal abrasion
    • Foreign body sensation
    • Pain
    • Tearing
    • Photophobia
    • Local anaesthetic
    • Examine - Fluorescein
    • Antibiotic drop
    • Cycloplegic drop
    • Pressure patch
    • If severe or non-healing - Refer
  • Never prescribe local anesthetic drops
  • For lid problems, is the lid margin affected?
