Objectives
- Given a history, and the results of a physical examination students should be able to make a diagnosis of the type of CNS infection present in the patient
- When asked students should be able to outline a plan for managing suspected meningitis in the setting of an altered sensorium and/or in the presence of focal neurological signs
- When presented the results of a CSF examination, the student should be able to determine the type of meningitis afflicting the patient is suffering and give a list of the most common offending organisms
- When asked, students should be able to write an antibiotic order for the empiric therapy of meningitis in an adult
- In a patient with herpes simplex encephalitis students should be able to list the antiviral therapy that is of use in the treatment of this condition.
