Neuroscience/Diseases of the peripheral nervous system
From IKE
Objectives
- Students should be able to make a diagnosis of systemic generalized peripheral neuropathy and differentiate clinically between a distal axonopathy and a primary demyelinating neuropathy. They should be able to diagnose the most common focal mono neuropathies and should be familiar with the presentation and causes of mono neuritis multiplex.
- Students should be able to discuss the pathophysiology and prognosis of an acute compression palsy (eg. Saturday Night palsy).
- Students should be able to give a brief description of the pathology of a toxic metabolic neuropathy.
- Students should be able to describe the most common symptoms of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
- Students should be able to describe the electrophysiological effects of segmental demyelination.
- Students should be able to describe the main presenting clinical features and key diagnostic tests for acute Guillian Barré syndrome.
- Students should be able to generally make a diagnosis of hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN).
