Microcytic anemia

Microcytic anemias are those anemias in which red blood cells are smaller in size, with a lowered mean cell volume (MCV). This type of anemia is generally caused by an underproduction or lack of availability of one of the major components of hemoglobin (heme, globin, or iron). Because cells are smaller than usual, and blood-carrying capacity is low.
