Jaundice
From IKE
Jaundice is a condition in which there is a yellowing of the skin, usually resulting from a liver disease or other gastrointestinal pathology. When plasma levels of bilirubin and its conjugates total more than 35μmol/L, the yellow color may be seen in the eyes and skin.
Jaundice may be prehepatic, hepatic, or posthepatic. In prehepatic jaundice, there is unconjugated bilirubin, no dark urine and potentially hemolysis or Gilbert's syndrome. Hepatic jaundice is the most common type, and presents with conjugated bilirubin and dark urine. When the causes for jaundice are posthepatic, it is usually due biliary obstruction, and presents with dark urine, itching, and pain.
