Insulin
From IKE
Insulin is a 6 000 MW protein synthesized at the rate of 2-4 units/hour by β-cells of pancreatic islets in response to high blood sugar levels. Defective secretion of insulin is the cause of diabetes mellitus. Insulin is anabolic, and thus leads to increased transport of glucose and amino acids into muscle, fat and liver cells. This induces hypoglycaemia.
The amino acid sequences of different animals' insulin are different, making it undesirable to give human insulin to cows or vice versa. This difference is not unique, as many proteins differ in their amino acid sequences across species.
