- reservoir in seagulls (Campylobacter coli / Campylobacter laridis)
- ulcerative collitus is not directly caused by infection with Camylobacter
- an acute phase due to imflammation following infection can be seen that looks like ulcerative colitus
- verotoxin
- attacks human liver cells
- specific culture needs to be requested
- most common cause of gastroenteritis and travellers diarrhea
- cause explosive diarrhea
- especially caused by raw milk
- a special culture needs to be carried out (stool culture at 42°C in specific media
- Should state suspicion of Campylobacter, so lab will preparethe special culture
- more common to do culture than microscopy for diagnosis.
