Blood is the red stuff in the human circulatory system. It has both cellular and plasma (fluid) components. The cellular component accounts for 45% of the blood mass and consists of:
- Red blood cells (erythrocytes; contain hemoglobin)
- White blood cells (leukocytes)
- Platelets (thrombocytes)
The plasma (fluid) component accounts for the other 55%, and is divided into:
- Water (95%)
- Proteins (albumin, gamma globulins, clotting factors)
- Electrolytes (Na+, Cl-, K+,etc.. )
- Glucose, fats and minerals
Blood is made by hematopoiesis.
